For over ten years, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences in the Lower Rhine region of Germany has provided an innovative, interdisciplinary and international education to young minds from around the world. We offer a total of 36 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in four multidisciplinary faculties: Technology and Bionics, Life Sciences, Society and Economics, and Communication and Environment. The degree programmes of the Faculty of Communication and Environment in Kamp-Lintfort are geared towards the needs of the region, but deeply international as well. The range of fields available to study include psychology, media computer science, administrative computer science, energy and environmental sciences, mobility and logistics, economics, usability engineering and design. Practical relevance is of major importance in all of our degree programmes. This is why we approach teaching and learning in the degree programmes Information and Communication Design B.A. and Design and Interaction M.A. through the lens of a future-oriented design education that particularly encourages interdisciplinary collaboration with IT experts, psychologists, natural scientists, engineers and economists in the faculty. Our excellently equipped laboratories and workshops place cutting edge equipment, workstation PCs and other professional tools at your disposal for high-quality media production and provide an ideal environment for teaching and research.

We are currently seeking a qualified expert to support these goals in the Faculty of Communication and Environment in Kamp-Lintfort in the following capacity:

PROFESSOR OF Digital Media Design

Salary grade “W2” according to LBesG NRW, Reference: 06A/F4/21


  • You should represent the field of digital media design – in particular interactive media-based systems – in teaching and research and have relevant competences in this field
  • Your teaching focus will be on design, technological and methodological content for the development and implementation of products, processes and services in the field of digital media, especially interactive media-based systems, with a particular emphasis on human-centred and participatory design based on the values of social, ecological and economical responsibility
  • You will be responsible for teaching the English-taught degree programmes “Information and Communication Design B.A.” and “Design and In-teraction M.A.” as well as related subjects
  • The position requires close cooperation with the two design degree programmes as well as the neighbouring professorships and degree programmes of the Faculty of Communication and Environment. In addition, the professorship will function as link to the FabLab in Kamp-Lintfort at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences
  • Supervising of bachelor’s and master’s theses
  • Advancing the subject area in a national and international context as well as establishing new teaching and research cooperation to this end
  • Supervising and continuing to develop existing laboratory and teaching environments
  • Taking an active role in the self-administration and in further development of our bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in design


  • A university degree in the field of design, an outstanding portfolio with clear relevance towards the advertised professorship and, if possible, a relevant doctorate
  • A committed personality with outstanding design, analytical and conceptual skills, solid didactic abilities as well as an interdisciplinary orientation and openness towards other subjects
  • The ability to carry out scholarly and creative work in the advertised teaching area as well as the willingness to link practice, theory and research as well as concept, design and technology
  • Practical professional experience in the conception, design and implementation of interactive media-based systems
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience in a number of the following fields: Human-Computer Interaction, User Experience Design, Information Design, Data Visualisation, Interactive Media-based Systems, Computational Design, Physical Computing, Creative Coding, Web Technologies, Internet of Things, Digital Fabrication as well as Virtual and Augmented Reality
  • Advanced proficiency in English is mandatory (C1 level)

General requirements for the appointment of new professors are derived from § 36 of the Higher Education Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Hochschulgesetz NRW). The following qualifications are therefore mandatory for all applicants to this position:

  •  A completed university degree in a relevant field
  •  Excellent academic and research skills, usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctoral dissertation. Candi-dates for design professorships are eligible for hire if they can demonstrate exceptional artistic aptitude and design achievements as well. Design achievements generally means a number of noteworthy achievements over the course of at least five years of work as an artist, with at least three of these years occurring outside of academia
  • At least five years of relevant career experience in the applied use or development of research findings and methodology; at least three of these years must have been outside of higher education
